Organización for Latino Awareness (OLA)
Organización for Latino Awareness (OLA) is an organization sponsored by CTU’s Hispanic Ministry Program (HMP). The organization has four principal goals:
- To offer CTU US Hispanics/Latino/as and Latinoamericano/as a chance to get to know each other and to be mutually supportive in an environment that can be challenging in terms of language and culture shock.
- To offer Non-Latino/as an opportunity to practice Spanish as well as a place to encounter and come to a better understanding of Latino/as and their cultures.
- To sponsor a variety of events such as lectures, liturgies, movie nights and fiestas that raise awareness of Hispanic/Latino/a culture and religiosity in the CTU community.
- To promote the need for ministering to the largest and fastest growing population in the U.S. Catholic Church: Latino/as.
Monthly meetings are in Spanish, English, and Espinglés (Spanglish).
For more information about OLA, please contact: Gilberto Cavazos-González, O.F.M. at CTU-Latino@ctu.edu
The activities listed below contribute to life at CTU, as well as help build a sense of community among the students, faculty, and staff. With the exception of Fiesta Primavera, attendance is free and open to all. Dates and times are publicized each year.
Mes de Orgullo Latino: Hispanic Awareness Month
From September 15th to October 15th. Along with the many Latino events sponsored by civic organizations in Chicago, CTU takes the opportunity to host a few events to honor U.S. Latino/as and raise awareness of their challenge and gift to the U.S. Catholic Church.
Latino Movie Nights
Every semester, OLA students will host a movie night showing a movie about Latino/Hispanic life and culture. Usually on a Friday evening, the movie includes free refreshments and an opportunity to talk about your impressions of the movie after the show. Past movies have included: Mi Familia (My Family), Crash, and Gatekeeper.
The Hispanic Ministry Program (HMP) and OLA sponsor one of the CTU school liturgies and/or prayer. We normally sponsor the Bilingual Misa Pana-Maria in honor of the Immaculate Conception. We also lead a bilingual prayer service in honor of our dearly departed on el Día de los Muertos (All Souls’Day), as well as Flor y Canto (Flower and Song) for Our Lady of Guadalupe del Tepeyac every year. The Oscar Romero Scholars celebrate a Mass bilingual (Spanish/English) every spring in Honor of Monseñor Oscar Romero.
OLA and HMP sponsor two or three lectures a year on the gift and challenge of the U.S. Hispanic/Latino/a community. The Oscar Romero Scholars offer a lecture every spring in Honor of Monseñor Oscar Romero of El Salvador.
Celebrate spring before the end of the school year crunch with a fund-raiser fiesta (party) sponsored by OLA and HMP. Enjoy food, drink, convivencia, and dancing. Door prizes awarded toward the end of the evening. Funds raised are to help pay for the events sponsored by HMP and OLA.
