Eco y Testimonio 2010
Event celebrates Romero Scholars, honors Hispanic minister
Approximately two hundred guests gathered at Catholic Theological Union on October 15 for Eco y Testimonio, a celebration of the Romero Scholars Program. For sixteen years the Oscar Romero Scholarship Program has offered full tuition scholarships to Hispanic/Latino/a men and women studying for graduate degrees in theology and ministry at CTU. Upon graduation, Romero Scholars commit to three years of ministry within the Archdiocese of Chicago, a co-sponsor of the program.
The evening also included the presentation of the Oscar A. Romero award to Rev. Gary Riebe-Estrella, S.V.D., Associate Professor of Practical Theology and Hispanic Ministry and former Vice President and Academic Dean of CTU. Fr. Riebe-Estrella currently serves as president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States and as Zonal Coordinator for North, Central, and South America for his religious congregation, the Divine Word Missionaries. The award is bestowed each year in the name of Archbishop Oscar Romero, martyr and defender of the poor in El Salvador.
