Catholic Theological Union President, the Rev. Donald Senior, CP, Receives the Touchstone Award from the National Federation of Priests’ Councils (NFPC)
Chicago, IL (April 8, 2013) The 2013 Touchstone Award will be presented to Passionist priest, the Rev. Donald Senior, C.P., who is the current president of Catholic Theological Union (CTU) in Chicago. Fr. Senior has been the president of CTU for 23 years, and is also a professor of New Testament Studies. Of the award Fr. Senior said, “To be honored by my fellow priests in this way touches me deeply. I am grateful for my years of priesthood and the many opportunities I have had to be of service. Thank you, National Federation of Priests' Councils--an organization I greatly admire.”
The Touchstone Award is presented to the priest, who in the view of NFPC, is one whose service in the Gospel of Jesus Christ exemplifies the purpose and goals of the Federation. In particular, his leadership enhances the ministry of others and his words and deeds support the life and ministry of priests. Thus he is, as it were, a touchstone for genuine, quality priesthood.
Fr. Senior received a Doctorate in New Testament Studies from the University of Louvain, and pursued additional graduate studies at Hebrew Union College and Harvard University. Fr. Senior has authored numerous books and articles. He is the general editor of The Bible Today and co-editor of the 22-volume international commentary series New Testament Message. He is the general editor of the Catholic Study Bible.
A frequent lecturer, Fr. Senior has also served on numerous boards and commissions. He is past president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America and the Association of Theological Schools of the United States and Canada. Father Senior has served as an official representative to the Southern Baptist/Roman Catholic Scholars Dialogue, sponsored jointly by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Southern Baptist Convention. In 2001, Fr. Senior was appointed by Pope John Paul II as a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and was reappointed in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. Locally, he is the current president of the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago.
