The Catholic-Muslim Studies Program is dedicated to building bridges of mutual understanding and profound respect between Muslims and Christians. The vision of this program is to create significant opportunities for the relationship between Muslims and Christians to deepen, and to reflect only the noblest values and highest ideals of their common spiritual heritage.
The Catholic Muslim Studies Program sponsors study, publication, dialogue, and cultural events in an effort to achieve these goals:
- To educate members of the church—especially leaders and teachers—so that they can share a genuine appreciation and understanding of Islam with other Christians.
- To educate men and women whom the Muslim community can respect and trust as worthy dialogue partners and true friends.
- To facilitate learning about Islam and Muslim peoples by creating contexts in which Muslims can represent themselves to others.
- To be a public advocate for peace and social justice by reducing the sense of alienation between Muslim and Christian cultures, and by helping people within these cultures become more aware of the richness of their common historical and religious heritage. (It is particularly important to enable both Christians and Muslims to abandon stereotypes and recognize the extraordinary diversity of opinion and orientation that exists within both traditions.)
