Fr. Thomas Reese, SJ,is a political scientist and a senior analyst for National Catholic Reporter. From 1998 to 2005, he served as editor-in-chief of America magazine. Under his leadership, the magazine fostered inquiry into and the discussion and
debate of politics, economics and other topics relevant to the contemporary Church. Prior to his time at America, he was a writer and lobbyist for tax reform.

From 1985 to 1998 and 2006 to 2013, he was a senior fellow at Woodstock Theological Center, researching and writing about politics and organization in the Church. He published a highly regarded trilogy on the subject: Archbishop: Inside the Power Structure of the American Catholic Church (1989), A Flock of Shepherds: The National Conference of Catholic Bishops (1992), and Inside the Vatican: The Politics and Organization of the Catholic Church (1996). In addition, he has written and edited for a variety of publications, including the Washington Post’s blog OnFaith, the Huffington Post, and several theological anthologies.

Fr. Reese has been a member of the Jesuit community since 1962 and was ordained a priest in 1974. He received his Master of Divinity degree from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley and his doctorate in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently based in Washington, D.C.
