Message from Chair of the Search Committee

Rev. Kurt Hartrich, O.F.M.

March 1, 2013

Dear friends of CTU,

It is my great pleasure to announce that the Presidential Search Committee has selected two exceptional finalists in the search for the next President of Catholic Theological Union (CTU).

They are the Rev. Mark Francis, C.S.V., and the Rev. Robin Ryan, C.P.

Fr. Mark Francis, C.S.V., is a member of the Clerics of St. Viator (Viatorians) and was ordained to the priesthood in 1982. Fr. Francis holds an M.Div. and an M.A. in Theology from Catholic Theological Union. He served for three years in Bogotá, Colombia, and then in 1988, he earned a Doctorate in Sacred liturgy (S.L.D.) from the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Sant'Anselmo in Rome. He taught Liturgy at CTU for 12 years and was a regular lecturer at the Liturgy Institute of Chicago and its Spanish language counterpart. In 2000, he returned to Rome as Superior General of the Clerics of St. Viator, where he oversaw the mission of the international community until 2012. He has written numerous books and articles on liturgical topics, including Shape A Circle Ever Wider: Inculturating the Liturgy in the United States (Liturgy Training Publications, 2000). He is especially interested in the relationship between liturgy and culture. Fr. Francis will visit the CTU campus on Monday, March 11, and Tuesday, March 12.

Fr. Robin Ryan, C.P., is a member of the Congregation of the Passion (Passionists) and was ordained to the priesthood in 1984. Fr. Ryan earned his M.Div. from Catholic Theological Union and his Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America. At CTU, he taught systematic theology from 2004 to 2010, and served as the founding Director of Catholics on Call, a national vocation discovery program for young adults. Prior to coming to CTU, Fr. Ryan taught theology at Saint John's Seminary in Boston for nine years. In May 2010, he was elected Vicar Provincial of St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Province. Fr. Ryan is the author of God and the Mystery of Human Suffering: A Theological Conversation Through the Ages (Paulist Press, 2011) and a number of essays on young adults and the Church, Christology, and ecclesiology. He is the editor and co-author of Catholics on Call: Discerning a Life of Service in the Church (Liturgical Press, 2010). Fr. Ryan will visit the CTU campus on Wednesday, March 20, and Thursday, March 21.

Each candidate’s curriculum vitae, statement of candidacy, and on-campus interview schedule will be posted here on the CTU Presidential Search website ( as soon as the final details are in place.

I am truly grateful to the CTU Presidential Search Committee and all who have been involved in this process for your good work. I ask that you continue to hold CTU in prayer as our journey for a new President continues.
