Apply For Loan

To begin the federal financial aid loan process, follow the steps below. Please read the page in its entirety before proceeding.

STEP ONE (1): COMPLETE FAFSA

A. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online. Anyone who wants financial aid for graduate school will need to fill out the FAFSA. The application is used to determine the dollar amount you will be expected to contribute towards your school expenses based on your income and assets. All federal loan awards are determined by the FAFSA. You can file your FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

B. You must use Catholic Theological Union’s school code (G09232).

C. Your SAR (Student Aid Report) will be sent to you by the FAFSA federal processor as an online link or by mail. Please review this and note your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

STEP TWO (2): COMPLETE CTU LOAN WORKSHEET

A. Complete the CTU Federal Student Loan Worksheet to calculate the exact amount you will need to borrow. (The Virtual Financial Aid Website, where you will actually apply for the loan, will give you average or estimated costs for attendance and what you quality for, not what you will actually need to borrow).

B. You will need your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from your SAR (see step 1 item C) and any scholarships you have been awarded from CTU.

C. Download the CTU Loan Worksheet here: 2014-2015 CTU Student Loan Worksheet

D. NOTE: In order for the application process to proceed in a timely manner, the completed worksheet must be received by Angela Paviglianiti in the Admissions Office at angelap@ctu.edu or by fax at 773.371.5452.

STEP THREE (3): SIGN MASTER PROMISSORY NOTE (MPN)

A. If you are borrowing a Federal Stafford loan for the first time at Catholic Theological Union, you will need to e-sign a master promissory note to promise to repay the funds when you graduate or are no longer enrolled. Students will only sign one MPN while they are enrolled at CTU. To sign the MPN go to https:www.studentloans.gov.

B. This must be completed in order to receive funds.

STEP FOUR (4): COMPLETE ENTRANCE COUNSELING

A. Before loan funds are disbursed, first time Federal Stafford borrowers must complete the appropriate Entrance Loan Counseling Sessions. To ensure that you understand the responsibility and the obligation you are assuming, the Federal Government requires you to participate in an online loan counseling session prior to receiving a Direct Loan. Once you sign in to the website, follow the instructions to complete the Counseling Session. To access the online session go to https://www.studentloans.gov.

STEP FIVE (5): APPLY FOR YOUR LOAN AT THE VIRTUAL FINANCIAL AID OFFICE

A. Now you are ready to visit the Virtual Financial Aid Office (VFAO) to apply for your loan. The VFAO interview provides the information needed to process your request for federal loans. All the information you send is privacy protected.

B. To complete the interview, you will need your EFC number from your FAFSA and the loan amount you are requesting from the CTU Federal Student Loan Worksheet. Please note: The loan amount recommended by the VFAO may be different than the amount indicated on the CTU Federal Student Loan Worksheet. It is highly recommended you request the amount indicated on your CTU Federal Student Loan Worksheet. We recommend printing a copy of the interview for your records before submission. To access the online session go to https://ctu.vfao.com

C. Once your loan is approved, you will be emailed a confirmation notification at the email address you have provided.

STEP SIX (6): DISBURSEMENTS

A. When your loan is ready to disburse you will receive an email from the Business Office at CTU.

B. All financial aid funds received through the federal government direct loan program are credited directly to the student’s account each semester, in compliance with the Department of Education regulations.

C. Complete the attached Authorization to use Title IV Funds to pay for Non-Institutional Charges. The purpose of this form is to obtain student permission to use Title IV funds (Federal Direct Loans) to cover miscellaneous expenses (such as, parking, health insurance, library fines, lost ID, micro-fridge, and other misc expenses) charged to your student account in the Business Office. This form is required by the US Dept of Education to cover miscellaneous costs if there is an excess after the standard costs are paid in full (tuition, fees, room and board). Students will only sign one Authorization while they are enrolled at CTU.

D. Click the following link to download the authorization form: authorization_to_use_title_iv_funds.pdf (Adobe Reader is required to view).

E. NOTE: In order for your loan proceeds to be applied to your student account, the completed authorization form must be received by Liz Sienkiewicz in the Business Office at lsienkiewicz@ctu.edu or by fax at 773.371.5551.

F. After your tuition and other expenses are paid, a check will be issued to you for the remaining balance.
