The Rev. Donald Senior, C.P., to Retire in June, 2013, as President of Catholic Theological Union  in Chicago

Chicago, IL (Nov. 14, 2012) The Rev. Donald Senior, C.P., announced today that he will retire as president of Catholic Theological Union (CTU) at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year. A noted biblical scholar and a leader in the field of theological education, he has served as president for 23 years.

During his tenure, CTU grew to be the largest Roman Catholic school of theology and ministry in the United States, and gained a national and international reputation. Fr. Senior said, “It has been an extraordinary privilege and deep satisfaction for me to serve as president of CTU for these many years, an institution I love. CTU is blessed with good health and many dynamic opportunities. Now is the time to prepare for an orderly transition to new leadership that will help guide the school to its future.”

The Rev. Kurt Hartrich, O.F.M., Chair of the CTU Board of Trustees, said, “We are most grateful to Fr. Don Senior for his 23 years of leadership as president of Catholic Theological Union, for his excellent teaching of the Scriptures, and for the many contributions he has made within the Archdiocese of Chicago as well as to the Universal Church. He has been a model of academic scholarship, pastoral service and priestly ministry. We are pleased that he will continue to be associated with CTU in a variety of ways after his official retirement. We are also confident that we will find another exceptional leader who will continue to guide the school and to build upon what Fr. Don has done so well.”

The Board of Trustees will soon initiate a search for Fr. Senior’s successor. Fr. Senior has agreed to serve until a successor is chosen and then will return to the faculty to teach. He has been a professor of New Testament at CTU since 1972.

Fr. Senior received a Doctorate in New Testament Studies from the University of Louvain, and pursued additional graduate studies at Hebrew Union College and Harvard University. A Passionist priest, Fr. Senior has authored numerous books and articles. He is the general editor of The Bible Today and co-editor of the 22-volume international commentary series New Testament Message. He is the general editor of the Catholic Study Bible. A frequent lecturer, Fr. Senior has also served on numerous boards and commissions. He is past president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America and the Association of Theological Schools of the United States and Canada. In 2001, Fr. Senior was appointed by Pope John Paul II as a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and was reappointed in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI.
