Degree Programs
Since 1967, Catholic Theological Union has been
recognized by the Illinois Department of Higher Education as an approved
degree-granting institution. CTU offers four degrees, which are fully accredited
by both the Association of Theological Schools and the North Central Association
of Colleges and Secondary Schools:
- Master of Divinity (M.Div.)
- Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (M.A.P.S.)
- Master of Arts in Theology (M.A.)
- Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.)
Curriculum
Catholic Theological Union’s master degree programs are shaped by an
innovative curriculum that integrates the personal, intellectual, and
interdisciplinary dimensions of theology and ministry. This curriculum models
the interrelatedness of theological and ministerial disciplines, and interweaves
theory with practice. The result is a comprehensive, integrative theological
education for ministry in an increasingly globalized world, and a solid
foundation for effectiveness as a minister in the Catholic church.
Components
The graduate theology curriculum has three primary components:
- The Core Curriculum is comprised of Foundational, Complementary, and
Integrating Core courses based on particular themes. - Area Requirements are courses that provide grounding in traditional
theological disciplines. - Electives are courses that allow further study in particular
areas of theology.
Dual Degrees
For students interested in combining a
theology degree with a masters degree in another discipline, several dual degree
programs are available. A dual degree in social work and theology can be earned
by combining a CTU master of divinity degree with either the A.M. degree through
the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, or the M.S.W.
through Loyola University of Chicago. By a special
arrangement with the University of Chicago, students may also pursue a
coordinated sequence of programs leading to the master of divinity degree from
CTU and the Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School.
